Beanbags are fun and so is this easy pattern. The panels can be made out of absolutely any colors, so this is a great way to use up yarn scraps. Kids and kids-at-heart love them.
Gauge
8 sc = 2 inches; 7 sc rows = 1 1/2 inches
Pattern Notes
Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join rounds with a slip stitch unless otherwise stated.
Finished Size
Approximately 16 inches tall when loosely stuffed.
Materials
- Medium (worsted) weight yarn (7 oz / 365 yds / 200 g per skein): 1 skein each of six colors for panels, plus black for trim.
- Size g / 6 / 4mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers
- Stuffing: beans, pellets, or foam pieces
Beanbag Panel
Make 1 of each of six colors:
Row 1: Ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, turn. (2 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc across, turn. (4 sc)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. (4 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn. (5 sc)
Rows 5-38: Repeat rows 3 and 4. (40 sc)
Rows 39-113: Repeat row 3.
Row 114: Ch 1, sc dec in next 2 sc, sc in each sc across to last 2 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc, turn. (38 sc)
Row 115: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. (38 sc)
Rows 116-147: Rep rows 114 and 115. (6 sc)
Row 148: Ch 1, sc dec in next 2 sc, sc in each of next 2 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc, turn. (4 sc)
Row 149: Ch 1, [sc dec in next 2 sc] twice, turn. (2 sc)
Row 150: Ch 1, sc in each of next 2 sc. (2 sc)
Round 151: Now work in rounds. Ch 1, working around entire Panel, work 2 sc in end of last row, sc in end of each row to first row at bottom of Panel, 2 sc in end of first row, place a stitch marker in last sc made, working in unused loops of starting ch, sc in each of next 2 chs at bottom of Panel, 2 sc in end of first row, place a st marker in first sc of 2-sc group, sc in end of each row to last row at top of Panel, 2 sc in end of last row, place a st marker in last sc made, sc in each of next 2 sc of row 150, join in beg sc, fasten off.
Round 152: Attach black in marked sc of round 151, ch 1, 2 sc in same st as beg ch-1, [sc in each sc to next marked sc, 2 sc in marked sc] 3 times, sc in last 2 sc, join in beg sc, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off.
Ends of Bag (Circles)
Make 2.
Round 1: With black, ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join in beg sc. (8 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, join in beg sc. (16 sc)
Round 3: Ch 1, [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 8 times, join in beg sc. (24 sc)
Round 4: Ch 1, [sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times, join in beg sc, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off. (30 sc)
Assembly
With panels in desired order, sew end sts of each Panel to an end circle. Sew sides of Panels tog and fill as desired with beans, pellets or foam pieces. To close opening, sew opposite ends of Panels to rem end circle.
More Ideas
- The same pattern can be worked up using a smaller hook and thinner yarn to make a bean-bag for dolls.
- Likewise, using a large needle with double-worsted yarn will produce a larger bag.
- Tightly stitch one up and fill it with sawdust for a colorful pin cushion.
