Crocheted snowflake patterns allow a crocheter to make standalone snowflakes or to attach them to make a larger body of work.

It’s always time to think of crocheting winter gifts. Here are three snowflake patterns to get started on right away. Make them standalone as ornaments or coasters, or attach them in any way desired to make throws, placemats, blankets, scarves…wherever imagination takes the crocheter.

The size of snowflakes will depend on the yarn and hooks chosen. Don’t hesitate to experiment to get the preferred size and texture.

Snowflake I Pattern

This snowflake is three dimensional; the centre stands up a bit from the rest of the flake. Starch it to make an ornament, or leave soft to make a blanket or scarf.

Special Abbreviation:

3 loop cluster = 7ch, sl st into first of these ch, [6ch, sl st into same ch as last sl st] twice.

  • Base ring: 8ch, join with a sl st.
  • Round1: 1ch, 18sc into ring, sl st to first sc.
  • Round2: 6ch (count as 1hdc, 4ch), skip first 3sc, 1hdc into next sc, [4ch, skip 2sc, 1hdc into next sc] 4 times, 4ch, sl st to 2nd of 6ch at beg of round.
  • Round3: 1ch, work [1sc, 1hdc, 3dc, 1hdc, 1sc] into each of the six 4ch sps, sl st to first sc. (6 petals)
  • Round4: Working behind each petal, sl st into base of each of first 4 sts, [5ch, skip next 6 sts, sl st into base of next dc] 6 times, working last sl st to base of same dc as sl st at beg of round.
  • Round5: 1ch, work [1sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 5tr, 1dc, 1hdc, 1sc] into each of the six 5ch sps, sl st into first sc.
  • Round6: Working behind each petal, sl st into base of each of first 6 sts, [6ch, skip next 10 sts, sl st into base of next tr] 5 times, 3ch, skip next 10 sts, 1 tr into base of next tr.
  • Round7: Sl st into sp made by tr just formed, into same sp work [1sc, 6ch, 1sc], 6ch *into next sp work [1sc, 6ch, 1sc], 6ch; rep from * 4 more times, sl st to first sc.
  • Round8: Sl st into each of first 3ch of 6ch sp, into same sp work [1sc, 6ch, 1sc], 6ch 1sc into next 6ch, *into next 6ch sp work [1sc, 6ch, 1sc], 6ch, 1sc into next 6ch sp, 6ch; rep from * 4 more times, sl st to first sc.
  • Round9: Sl st into each of first 3ch of 6ch sp, into same sp work [1sc, 6ch, 1sc], 6ch, [1 sc into next 6ch sp, 6ch] twice, *into next 6ch sp work [1sc, 6ch, 1sc,] 6ch, [1sc into next 6ch sp, 6ch] twice; rep from * 4 more times, sl st to first sc.
  • Round10: Sl st into each of first 3ch of first 6ch sp, into same sp work [1sc, 3 loop cluster, 1sc], 6ch, [1sc into next 6ch sp, 6ch] 3 times, *into next 6ch sp work [1sc, 3 loop cluster, 1sc], 6ch, [1sc into next 6ch sp, 6ch] 3 times; rep from * 4 more times, sl st to first sc.
  • Fasten off.

Snowflake II Pattern

Special Abbreviation:

Htr = yo twice, insert hook in st, yo and draw through two loops, yo and draw through last 3 loops.

  • Base ring: 6 ch, join with sl st.
  • Round1: 1 ch, [1sc into ring, 7ch] 6 times, join with sl st to first sc (6 loops).
  • Round2: *1 ch, into next 7ch sp work [2sc, 1hdc, 3dc, 1htr, 1tr, 1htr, 3dc, 1hdc, 2sc], 1 ch, sl st to next sc; rep from * 5 times more.
  • Round3: 7 sl sts to center tr, *4ch, sl st into same tr, 8 ch, sl st on top of next tr; rep from * around.
  • Round4: sl st into 4ch loop, * 1 ch, work 1sc, 2dc, 2ch, [3dc, 2ch] twice, 2dc, 1sc into same sp, 1 ch, 6sc into next 8ch sp; rep from * around, join with sl st to first sc.
  • Fasten off.

Snowflake III Pattern

Special Abbreviations:

Petal = 1 ch, 1 tr into next sc, 2 ch, 1 tr into stem of last tr two thirds of the way down, 2ch, [1dc, 2ch] twice into stem of last tr (two thirds of the way down as before), 1 dc two thirds of the way down stem of first tr, 1 ch, 1 sc into next dc.

Bobble = 3dc into next sc until 1 loop of each remains on hook, yo and through all 4 loops on hook.

  • Base ring: 8ch, join with sl st.
  • Round1: 1ch, 16sc into ring, sl st to first sc.
  • Round2: 3ch, 2dc into same place as last sl st until 1 loop of each dc remains on hook, yo and draw through all 3 loops, (1 bobble made at beg of round, [3 ch, skip next sc, 1 bobble into next sc] 7 times, 3ch, sl st to top of 3ch at beg of round.
  • Round3: 6ch (count as 1dc and 3ch), 1sc into next 3ch sp, 3ch, [1dc into next bobble, 3ch, 1sc to next 3ch sp, 3ch] 7 times, sl st into 3rd of 6ch.
