People who use walkers and/or wheelchairs will love a crocheted tote made just for their needs. Crochet a bag that attaches to mobility-assistance devices.

Disabled friends will appreciate a practical and attractive bag that attaches to wheelchairs and walkers. The tote’s finished size is approximately 2.5” x 7 ¾” x 8.5”.

Materials

  • 2 balls of double strand size 3 crochet cotton (300yds per ball), any color
  • Size B/2.25mm crochet hook
  • 2 ¾” buttons, any color
  • 2 round ¾” hook-and-loop fasteners
  • 2 strips ½” x 1” hook-and-loop fasteners
  • Sewing needle
  • Sewing thread

Gauge

21dc = 4”; 11dc rows = 4”

Notes

  • Ch-3 at beg of dc rows counts as first dc unless otherwise stated.
  • Skill Level: Easy
  • bpdc: back post dc
  • fpdc: front post dc

Front Panel

  • Row1: (RS) Ch 41, dc in 4thch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (39 dc)
  • Row2: Ch3, dc in each of next 2sts, [bpdc around next st, dc in each of next 3sts] across, turn.
  • Row3: Ch3, dc in each of next 2sts, [fpdc, dc in each of next 3sts] across, turn.
  • Rows 4-25: [Rep rows 2 and 3 alternately] 11 times. Do not turn at end of last row.
  • Row 26: Working in ends of rows, ch1, 2sc in end of each row across. Fasten off.
  • Row 27: Working in ends of row on opposite side, join with sc in end of first row, sc in same row, 2sc in end of each row across. Fasten off.

Back Panel

Straps

Make 2.

  • Rows 2-58: Ch1, sc in each st across, turn. Do not turn at end of last row.
  • Row 59: Working in ends of rows, ch1, sc in end of each row across. Fasten off.
  • Row 60: Working in ends of rows on opposite side, join with sc in end of row 1, sc in end of each row across. Fasten off.

Finishing

  • Weave 1 strap through each set of strap openings on each side of back.
  • Sew 1 side of round fasteners, centered, to inside edge of flap 3 inches apart and other side of fasteners to front.
  • Sew buttons to outside edge of flap, centered, 3 inches apart.
  • For each strap, sew 1 side of fastener strip to top of 1 end of strap, and other side of fastener to bottom on opposite end of strap.
  • If necessary, use plastic canvas or a fabric lining to make tote more durable. Starching and blocking the bag will help it keep its shape.
